ABOUT US

We are a private, non-profit
organization, based in Rome.
We are committed to raising awareness about the social issues affecting national and international communities.
In the last five years, BEAWARENOW has brought attention to human trafficking and gender violence using projects on the ground, public awareness activities, and education in schools and universities in both Italy and India, all with a unique tool: participative art.

BEAWARENOW
promotes respect, active citizenship and personal responsibility

WHAT WE DO

We promote creativity, the development of human potential, youth civil leadership, peer education and the empowerment of those in need. We work with schools, with youth and their families, with both for-profit and non-profit organizations, and with government institutions. BEAWARENOW organizes cultural and artistic initiatives for private and public entities, both nationally and internationally, which aim to protect everyone, including our planet.

PARTICIPATORY ART

It is our preferred tool of communication; an active experience rather than a contemplative one which is manifested at the moment of its own fruition, and the very action that is created, that is required, is what ultimately builds awareness. An action that generates more action. Art can certainly be aesthetically pleasing, but above all else it is an experience that drives consciousness. To paraphrase Joan Mirò, art becomes a seed that, just like language, reveals and expresses its own cognitive and communicative nature. We have chosen to plant this seed in the minds of younger generations, with the hope of galvanizing the entire global community.

OUR STORY

Our story began in June of 2013, with a meeting between Janine von Thüngen, German sculptor and long-term resident in Italy, and Ruchira Gupta, journalist, human rights activist, and the founder of the international “Apne Aap – Women Worldwide” movement, which is on the front lines fighting the exploitation and trafficking of women and girls in India around the world.

After that meeting, Janine, the co-founder and artistic director of BEAWARENOW, designed sculptures whose deep impact was made even stronger by the participation in their creation.

«The project started with a single artwork, a girl without arms, filled with synthetic hair. She has no arms to defend herself. Each participant had to pull a stand of hair from the sculpture. Participatory art is a statement, so as not to forget the little girl. For me, it is the most significant form of art today. As a sculptress, tactile art leaves indelible imprints in the memory of those who experience it. It generates empathy where numbers and visual facts can’t reach. We all need to be close to the last girl»

OUR STAFF

We are a collective of artists, entrepreneurs, scholars, and professionals from diverse nationalities who believe participative art can engage, raise awareness, and rally the younger generation to defend human rights.
