Why is Python 2.7 slower than Python 3.6?
I’m struggling to find any information on this topic. It seems the Python 2 series is much slower than the 3 series. For example, a relatively simple code like this

b = np.ones((100000,))
t0 = time.clock()
c = a+b
t1 = time.clock()
is approximately ten times slower on Python 2 than Python 3. I have tried several packages including sympy, scipy, and numpy in both versions, and the results are the same. As you can see, I don’t know how to explain it. I have considered using Python 2.7 while waiting for the 3.x series to be released, but I cannot find a good reason to do so.
For Python 3, I’m on a Windows platform. For Python 2, I’m on a Ubuntu 15.04 platform.
The cause is probably because Python 3 uses C99/C11 features which are more efficient. However, this does require (somewhat) recent compiler. (And Python 3 does make lots of changes to the core C types which could be much more efficient, but I think that the changes made to Python 3 are more likely.)
